The Trip to Canada
Same four fishermen this year as last year. Matt K out this year due to his wedding in late June. A few hiccups on the way to camp. After taking the group picture, Bill's wife Mary asked "Everyone have their passports?". "Oops", says Bill; so there is a side trip back home to get his passport. Merging onto interstate, we hear banging on the roof. Loose seal strip above windshield. Thank goodness for duct tape! Good time to border (2am) and to float plane base (7:30am). Joe gets the third degree at the border. Bill was asked "And what do you do at your non-profit?" Turns out Bill just got a big promotion, so he proudly declares "I'm the COO." New planes at West Caribou. New pilots also. Got lost flying into camp. The normal 10 minute flight becomes a 30 minute flight.
Great Start
Overcast, light rain, high 50's in camp. Patsy says "They're biting everywhere!", and they are. Fish caught in all the typical "classic" spots. Dozens of walleye caught; just a few pike. Andy's had "amateur hour" at Kent's Korner trying to land a decent sized pike. Let it run under the boat and cut the line.
A First Big Walleye
Mike and Andy fish the shoreline behind Dave's Island and catch 25" (5.8#) walleye and a 17" walleye. Both released! Andy's 25" on purpose, but Mike's 17" not so. He thought we were only keeping walleye 15" long (but not more). Turkey brats for lunch. Fishing more and more out in the main part of the lake. Less and less in The Classics.
